Morning,
The other day while going through my mother’s photos with my son looking for pictures for him to put on a dvd I found a package containing two sets of negatives. When I went to Nam in July of 66 my father gave me his thirty five millimeter camera to use. These two packages of negatives contained my first two rolls of film shot in Nam.
It was an absolute bear scanning them in. Some of the photos are inside out (US Army on the right breast spelled backwards) but I didn’t want to rescan so we’ll have to live with it unless Leo has a program to straighten it out. I don’t recall who most of the people are in the photos are or where we were when they were taken. I do recall the 90th though and there are some good pictures of it.
I’ll send these to Leo and when he can he’ll get them up. Enjoy, Harvey
Harvey-- Nothing to it, the photos have been corrected!

I know this one was in the motor pool on the airbase at Long Bien because the truck is a second platoon truck. Here I cam repacking wheel bearings I guess on a three quarter.

Harpole about July 66 in Bien Hoa. It had to be Bien Hoa because he was in the second platoon.

I believe this was taken Cong Ly compound Bien Hoa.
Notice that we’re still wearing stateside fatigues which were rather warm for the Nam
climate.

I haven’t a clue where this was taken. But it looks like one heckuva nice rice paddy.

This was taken in the bus when we pulled out of Saigon airport heading for Long Binh and the 90th Replacement Battalion.

In the background you can see the showers and latrines.

At first I thought this shot was of Vietnamese laborers. But when I looked at it closer I realized it was soldiers at the 90th preparing concrete pads for future barracks. The building on the right is a latrine. If you look to the left you will see some halves of fifty five gallon drums. These drum halves were placed under the seats in the latrines. Every morning these were pulled out and replaced with empties. Those pulled out had human waste in them. Diesel and gasoline was poured into the barrel halves and mixed with the waste. This was fondly referred to as “burning shit”.

The following shots are from a convoy into Saigon. I was the first vehicle behind the lieutenant and his driver. I was driving a deuce and a half.
In Saigon we came upon an accident involving an ARVN jeep. If you look close you will see the soldiers grabbing dirt to fight the engine fire.

Jimmy Holt as we were leaving Vung Tau for Bien Hoa on that C123 in the background. This was July of 66.
First we went to Saigon when we landed from the states. Then to Long Binh at the ninetieth replacement battalion for a couple of days. It was then a ride from Saigon to Vung Tau after dark on a Caribou to become part of the 267. Five of us newbies were sent to Bien Hoa to become part of the 2nd platoon.

Homes by the tracks are the same everywhere I guess.
|
|
|
|
You can’t see the detail. But that lean to or awning behind the man with the cart is beer labels. I don’t know if they had a method of flattening out beer cans and assembling them into sheets that could be used for siding. Or if the scrap yards in the States sent over reject panels. But all over the place you’d see these Miller or Pabst or Bud labels on pieces of steel used for siding on homes.

Young girl doing her chores with a smile. The Vietnamese are an amazing people. I look at all the problems we have with the War and I have to wonder how they’re doing. If Agent Orange is still screwing us up what’s it doing to them?

The greatest lady ever. This was taken at Cong Ly compound Bien Hoa. They showed up to put on an USO show. There couldn’t have been more than fifteen of us able to attend and she went through the whole act. And it was a class one.
She pushed out her chest, did a little strut, then pointed at her eyes. “They’re real and they’re round” or something like that is what she said. She was a character and I’ve loved her ever since. RIP Martha Raye
